The Reading Corner: Confessions of a GP

Saturday, 30 November 2013

Hello everyone! I'm sorry this post is late but I've been very busy with assignments and exams at university. I have a few hours spare so I thought I'd get this post up for all of you.
Yet again I have finished another book, I'm really living up to my bookworm reputation lately. I've recently just finished Confessions of a GP which I thought I'd read while I was waiting for another book which is part of a series to arrive.

I really like the front cover of this book, the art work is colourful, fun and quirky.
This book has been deemed The Number One Bestseller and has sold over 250,000 copies. I can see why as well, this book is lighthearted, incredibly funny and a real page turner.
Throughout the book you'll get to hear about Dr. Daniels many unusual patients with their strange requests. A few of my favourites are Miss Tibbs who has an unhealthy obsession with Tom Jones, Kirsty the transvestite and reading some of the notes that actual medical students have written in the past. But you don't just get to read the funny side of being a GP but also some of the few tougher and sad patients that are also dealt with.
I could read this book over and over again because I enjoyed it so much. I'm definately going to be reading more books from the confessions series, the next one I want to read is Confessions of a Police Constable.
I don't think I'll be able to look at my Doctor in the same way again now that I've read this book.

Have you read any books from the Confessions series?

Three Mini Reviews: Possibility Products

Sunday, 24 November 2013

Hello everyone! I hope you're all well. As you're reading this I will be cosplaying it up at the Birmingham Comic Con, but that will be for another post. In the mean time I want to share some quick reviews of the products I've been using for bathing and showering.

L-R: Marshmallow Frosting 3 in 1 bubble bath, shower gel and shampoo/ Vanilla Creme Brulee body scrub/ Vanilla Creme Brulee body butter

Marshmallow  3 in 1 Bubble Bath, Shower Gel and Shampoo

I've been wanting to try this for so long after smelling it in my local Home Bargains. I finally brought it after using up all my other bath products. This smells delicious, it's not too sickly sweet or overpowering but it's strong enough to leave a slight scent to your skin.
I prefer to use this as a bubble bath overall because a little goes a long way and makes a lot of bubbles. It's okay as a shower gel and I'm not even going to attempt to use it as a shampoo, it just seems like it wouldn't be enough to clean my hair and I need to use products designed for coloured hair anyway.I would definately repurchase this and I want to try the Raspberry Pavlova scent next.

Vanilla Creme Brulee Body scrub

Also another amazing scent, I love vanilla scents during the colder months, it makes me feel cosy. I love the consistency of this product, it's exfoliating enough to remove any dead skin cells but it isn't abrasive. If you have sensitive skin, I'd give this one a go because I have sensitive skin and some body scrubs can make my skin turn red and blotchy but this works perfectly.
It leaves my skin feeling soft and smelling great. I'd definately repurchase this.

Vanilla Creme Brulee Body Butter

Yet another vanilla scented product, can you see a trend forming? This is my favourite smelling one out of all three. It just smells like someone has crushed up a vanilla pod and stuffed it into a tub.
This is also the first body butter I've ever used that actually has a consistency similar to butter. I know it sounds strange but it is quite solid at first but once it's rubbed in, it glides across the skin so easily.
It keeps my skin super soft during these colder months. It leaves a scent on the skin all day.
Yet again I would repurchase this because it's fantastic.

I'd highly recommend trying out some Possibility products for yourself.

Real Techniques Expert Face Brush Review

Wednesday, 20 November 2013

Hello everyone! I am once again late to hitch a ride on the band wagon with this one. I've always wanted to try the Real Techniques brushes because I've always read and heard nothing but good things about them, however I've just never got round to trying any. Until I noticed the expert face brush selling for just over £6 on Amazon I had to get it there and then.

Firstly I'd like to apologize for the slight lack in quality with these pictures, it was a very dull day when I took them and I may have made them a tad bit bright.
I really only have one thing to say about this brush, where have you been all my life? But I wont just leave it at that, this brush deserves more credit than that.
I used to use the E.L.F. powder brush to buff in my foundation and although that is a good brush it does not compare to the finish this one gives. It buffs my foundation in seamlessly without any streak marks. It gives an airbrushed finish to the skin without it looking fake (if that makes sense).
This brush honestly has to be the softest brush I've ever used, it doesn't scratch or mark my face which has happened in the past and it washes easily as well without any shedding and it also retains it's shape after it's dried.
The design is very simple and sleek, I like the matte black on the end of the brush and the bright orange handle makes it that little less boring.
I just can't fault this brush in any way, it's that good!
I'm so glad  I finally brought it and I will definately be purchasing more brushes in the future.

What other Real Techniques brushes do you recommend?

The Reading Corner: Oh Dear Silvia

Sunday, 17 November 2013

Hello everyone! I hope you're all well. I have another book review for you today, since taking a book with me to read on the bus to university with me I have been flying through them. I have currently finished Oh Dear Silvia by Dawn French which only took my about 3 days to finish.

This book follows the lives of 6 characters (Ed, Jo, Cat, Tia, Winnie and Cassie) who are all visiting Silvia who is in a coma in hospital. They all have their own harsh and sad stories within the book which you get to find out more about as you progress. My favourite character from the book is Winnie who is a nurse at the hospital and she cares for Silvia, she also has a very broad Jamaican accent which is fun to read throughout the book.
A great thing about this book is Dawn French's amazing writing style which allows you to connect with each character in your own way, even with Silvia who doesn't speak at all throughout the book, yet her presence is always known.
I want to give so much away to all of you about this story because there is so much I want to say but I just can't! Or else I'd spoil it for all of you. You will have to read it for yourself to appreciate Dawn French's literary genius.
I hope Dawn French continues to write more novels in the future. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, it's highly addictive and always keeps you guessing.

What book are you reading at the moment?

The Reading Corner- Specials

Wednesday, 13 November 2013

Hello everyone! I've finally finished another book, it's taken me so long to finish Specials because I've been so busy at university I haven't found the time to read, until one day I decided to take this book on the bus with me to read on the 50 minute journey and within a week I finished it!

I have to say out of the trilogy this one has by far been my favourite. In this book Tally is no longer a Pretty, she is now part of Special Circumstances and her team "The Cutters" are on a mission to finally put an end to The Smoke. To find out whether or not they succeed you'll have to read the book for yourself.
This book definitely brought everything together and solved any conflicts that were still ongoing in the last two books. In this book I noticed a theme of self-discovery and finding out who Tally really is as a person and there seems to be a prominent message of always be true to yourself.
I can't believe the trilogy is over but I'm going to be reading the "spin off" book Extras as soon as my Amazon order arrives. So keep an eye out for my thoughts on that in the future.
If you like a distopian society style books then you will probably like this book trilogy.

What book are you currently reading?

NOTW: MUA Koala Bear Nail Polish

Sunday, 10 November 2013

Hello everyone! I hope you're all well. I have a quick NOTW post for you today, sharing with you a bargain that you should all know about!

In my recent MUA haul (Post Here ) I purchased this little beauty for a steal of just £1!. But can we just take a moment to appreciate how adorable the name for this polish is , the name Koala Bear pretty much sold it for me, as well as the fact that I needed a new grey nail polish.
I was surprised how small the bottle was when I received it but that made it seem even cuter. The packaging reminds me a lot of the Essie nail polishes.
I had to apply 3 coats to get an opaque colour which was a bit annoying but it dried relatively quickly so it wasn't too bad.
For the price the quality is fantastic! I wore this polish for about 5 days before there was any major chipping.
I definitely want to try more MUA polishes, I've currently got my eye on the dark plum shade.
This polish can be purchased in Superdrug or on the MUA website.

Have you tried any of the MUA polishes?

NYX Taupe Blush Review

Wednesday, 6 November 2013

Hello everyone! I hope you're all well. I've never been one for contouring at all, I honestly never saw the point in it. However I'm attending Comic Con this year and I am cosplaying for the weekend and the character I'm going as has a different face shape to me and I need to recreate it for myself. I heard great things about the NYX Taupe blush being used as a contour for pale skin so I thought I'd give it a go for myself.

I don't know why but I love the packaging of NYX blushes, they just look so cute and small and the quilted embossing is a nice added touch as well.
When I first swatched this I was a bit sceptical about how it was going to define my face because it was quite sheer. However when I tried it for the first time I was amazed! It adds the perfect amount of subtle defintion without it looking like you have a brown streak across your face.
Now I can see why people contour, it adds so much dimension to your face and because I wear my makeup with a matte finish, I need to bring the definition back to my face with contouring and highlighting.
I don't know if I will contour my face everyday, it will depend on whether I have the time or whether I can be bothered. But when I do use it, I can definitely see a difference.
This blush can be purchased from the NYX website for £6.00.

What products do you use to contour?

Mini MUA Haul

Sunday, 3 November 2013

Hello everyone! I hope you're all well. I recently made an order on the MUA website, my package finally arrived on thursday so i thought I'd share with you the things I ordered.

Top row: F6 contour and blush brush/ Eyeliner Pencil- Snow White
Middle Row: Pearl Eyeshadow- Shade 1 and 22
Bottom Row: Powder Blush- Shade 4/ Nail Polish- Koala Bear/ Undress Your Skin Highlighter/ Matte Perfect Face Primer

Top to bottom: Undress Your Skin Highlighter/ Powder Blush- Shade 4/ Pearl eyeshadow- Shade 22 and 1/ Eyeliner Pencil- Snow White

I purchased all these products to use for my cosplay for Comic Con in November (I'm so excited) except for the nail polish, I brought that because I've been after it for ages and it's always been out of stock.
I can't believe how fast everything arrived I ordered everything on a Sunday and it arrived by thursday ( I think that's pretty quick). It was packaged in a cute little cardboard box and each product was smothered in bubble wrap which is great because one I can have endless fun popping it all and it also stopped any of my powder products from shattering.
The quality of MUA products is amazing and these are no exception, I can't believe how pigmented everything is considering each product was less than £5! I will have a review on each of the products in the future (so keep an eye out) and give you my full thoughts on each one but so far I am very impressed.
Everything can be purchased from the MUA website or Superdrug.
If you would like to see my makeup look for Comic Con let me know and I will do my best to make it happen.

Have you purchased anything from MUA recently?
Thank you for stopping by!
